I have a confession... I'm obsessed. With baking blogs.
I've been reading so many lately, and I couldn't help but wonder, "Maybe I could do that too?"
So many of the blogs I see are baking professionals, with heaps of training and experience, or stay-at-home creative types without strict schedules and looming deadlines, or real grownups that have money to spend on nifty baking supplies.
I am none of the above.
So I thought about it, and considered, "Maybe I've found a niche?"
I'm just a youngin'. I have very little experience in very few areas, and certainly do not have any experience baking beyond cracking an egg into Betty Crocker cookie mixes with my mother and reading through Pinterest. I started baking a few years ago, and have been sharing pictures of my creations on Instagram and Facebook ever since. Because pictures make everything more fun, I'll share some of my past favourites below.
I'm a full-time student and a part-time lifeguard/swim instructor. I sing in a choir, and volunteer coach a special-needs swim team - in other words - all I know are schedules and deadlines. I don't have hours to research recipes and experiment with ingredient lists. All-day projects are few and far between.
Being a student is wonderful. I get to spend my days delving into Dostoyevsky and graphing the ways that fiscal policy influences the economy. Being a student is also not-so-wonderful. I'm broke. I don't have a top-of-the line kitchen, any of the fancy equipment. I'm armed with a Walmart hand mixer and a couple of Wilton piping bag tips. My collection of tools is growing, but incredibly limited. I also seldom have all of the ingredients I need. I make do, and use a lot of substitutes.
Sound familiar? Do you ever feel like you lack the experience, time, or money to bake?
If so, this is the place for you.
We'll cheer at our triumphs, laugh at our goof-ups, and always lick the spoon clean.
I'd be honoured to have you along for the ride.
